One router (BGN), different speeds on wireless NIC's? What's with?

$

Hi,

I have an N-rated router (I know, I know...there are newer faster AC ones out there, but this is fine for me) in my living room.

In my bedroom, I have 3 laptops.
  • One (my wife's: Acer) shows a status of 150Mbps and has an Atheros wireless card.
  • One (my work: HP) shows a max of only 54Mbps and has a Broadcom 4313GN wireless card which shows up as 802.11b/g/n 1x1.
  • One (my personal: also an HP) also shows a max of 54Mbps and has an Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AG wireless card.

I can understand my personal laptop not showing higher Mbps as it doesn't appear to support 802.11 N speeds but my work laptop is what is a bit surprising seeing as it appears to be 'N-rated'.

Can anyone shed some light?

Is there a setting on the wireless card that needs to be amended?

Thanks in advance.

Trying to connect my Synology DS213 to a New RT-AC68U under USB 3 and I can't seem to get the RT-AC68U to even see the usb3.
I've tried firmware 3.0.0.4.374.4887 , 3.0.0.4.374.4561 and Merlin - build 3.0.0.4.374.34 also tried 3 different usb3 cables none will detect or even show up the the AC68U under usb 2 or 3. When I plug a flash drive into the router it lights up and detects no problem but when i plug in a cables nothing no light up no detect as if theirs nothing connected. Running windows 8.1 all latest updates

Any suggestions please ????

RT-AC68U - Did I Fix My Random Reboots?/Merlin Build Recommendations?

Hey everyone,

So from lurking on this forum for the past day, I can see that a lot of people like myself were having really odd disconnects with the AC68U (I have the AC68R - same thing, I believe?). Specifically, my router would randomly disconnect during the late hours of the night - four or five days ago it was really, REALLY bad, about 6 disconnects in the night while on a Skype conversation, then not so bad three nights ago with maybe 2 or 3 disconnects just browsing, and two nights ago the router disconnected while I was doing a product launch (which led me to not get the product!). While the router's range has been great, its been like this for a bit. I work online, so I can't have it disconnecting all the time.

So yesterday, I decided to result to the stock firmware of 3.0.0.4.374_583 - while I recognize that this is a slightly unsecure firmware due to its problems with USB drives, I don't use any on the router. So far, I have about 8 devices on the network, one wired connection, and either an Xbox One or Apple TV also through a wired connection. Thing is, I forgot to take my log down, and my current uptime is 0 days 13 hours 54 minutes 27 seconds at the moment, and I wanted to give my log to see if anyone could determine whether there was a problem at some point.

What I'm looking at is the later half - I have no idea what "Expired NAT" is, but someone said it's a normal thing? I also have no idea why it goes from March 30 to 29 to 30. Also, I hear about Merlin's wonderful builds and haven't tried them yet - does anyone know if they're more stable than the stock firmware? Do I Factory Reset and then install a Merlin firmware over it?

Thanks everyone!

[LG N2B1] - [HOWTO] Downgrade to Old UI from New UI

$
0
0
YOU WILL LOSE ALL DATA. MAKE A BACKUP FIRST!

I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR ACTIONS. DON'T BLAME ME IF YOU MESS YOUR NAS UP.

that being said, this doesn't harm the bootloader in any way so if you mess up, you can easily recover.

If you updated to the New UI and would like to downgrade, here's how:

PREREQUISITES:
LGNAS (N2B1 is tested and working. READ NOTE AT BOTTOM***)
A way to upload the firmware (either windows pc or usb flash drive.)
Firmware files WINDOWS METHOD : http://www.mediafire.com/download/cu...q4/new2old.zip
Firmware files USB METHOD : https://www.mediafire.com/?lj990n7z13wenvv

Steps:
1) Backup all data on your NAS.
2) If using the USB method, read http://forum.nas-portal.org/showthre...SB-flash-drive HOWEVER use the zip file attached here and unzip that to the subdirectory instead of the other files. SKIP TO STEP 8 after this is complete.

3) If using the windows method, unzip the zip file posted above and run the nasdetector.exe
4) Put nas into netboot mode by holding the two arrow buttons when turning the unit on
5) In the nasdetector program, click on the nas you are downgrading.
6) Click install nas system and select the zip file that is in the app's folder called New2OldUI.zip
7) Install the zip and when the NAS reboots, It may hang. That is normal. Just restart it.
8) The downgrade should be complete and you should now have the latest tantulus firmware installed. There is one more step that is not required but is RECOMMENDED
9) I recommend that you open the NAS's web page and do a system INIT because that would get rid of any side effects from the install. from there you can install any OLD UI firmware you want.

****NOTE***** If anyone is brave enough to test this on another NAS, replace the firmware_2660_1_0_0t.bin with the firmware that corresponds to your NAS's old UI and change the "firmware_2660_1_0_0t" line in the tftp_files2.txt file to the name of your firmware file.

[LG N2B1] - [HOWTO] NAS update firmware and initialize HDDs using USB flash drive.

This is a how-to guide on updating the firmware on a NAS using a USB flash drive.

THIS WILL FORMAT YOUR HARD DRIVES. ALL DATA WILL BE LOST!

I am not responsible for any damage or loss of data done to your NAS .

This Has been tested and is working on an N2B1 NAS but june work on others as well.

Prerequisites:
1) LG NAS with the new UBOOT boot loader (this will not work with the old UBOOT)
2) USB Flash drive
3) firmware you want to use.
4) netenc_nc1_10094.zip attachment: http://www.mediafire.com/download/zf..._nc1_10094.zip

STEPS:
1) Backup all data on your NAS and USB flash drive
2) format USB flash drive to the FAT32 file System. (if it is multi-partitioned, you need to use the very first partition. For example, sdb1 or sdc1)
3) Create a subdirectory on the flash drive for the model of your nas. For example the directory NC1 is used for a N2B1 NAS
4) Extract the zip and copy the netenc firmware image to the subfolder on the flash drive.
5) Rename the files (this is important)

uIlmage - uImage
initrd.gz - initrd
firmware**.bin - firmware.tar.gz

6) Eject the USB drive and plug it into the NAS
7) Reboot the NAS into NetBoot mode by holding down the two arrow buttons on the device When you press the power button.
8) Let the firmware and when to install the NAS reboots, Remove the USB drive. If after removing the USB drive the NAS hangs, just reboot it.
9) Thats IT!

ASUS RT-AC68U Wifi Dropout?

$

I've recently purchased the ASUS RT-AC68U and after initial issues with the firmware, I've adopted Merlin's latest release which I haven't had an issue with. However wile streaming on my PS3, I'm getting regular drop offs (disconnect from the media server). I can see that from the network settings in the PS3, it drops the WiFi connection and reconnects after a few seconds.

My other Wifi devices seem to be ok Ipad, iphone etc. I've check the WiFi log on the router but it doesn't tell me much.

I'm running Plex from Windows 8 64bit, which I've been running for some time on my hold Netgear router. Your guidance would be appreciated!

Is there a lower level of logging I can use to pinpoint the issue?

Can't get bridge to connect to TP-Link TL-WDR3500

I have a Linksys WRT54G setup as a wireless bridge using Tomato firmware. It's been working fine for months with my AT&T-supplied 2Wire router.

I'm trying to upgrade my network and have set up a new TP-Link TL-WDR3500 N600 router as an access point. It is working fine with all my other endpoints (mostly phones) and now I want it to work with the bridge as well. I have entered the new SSID and security info in Tomato, put everything on a fixed channel etc., but it doesn't work.

Tomato shows the connection with better signal strength than before, but unless I have an ethernet cable hooked up I can't ping the WRT54G. The last time I went through this I had to enable multicast in Tomato (thanks SNB) but now it is enabled and the bridge still doesn't work. Is there some setting on the AP I need to enable to get this to work?

Thanks in advance.

Internet speed lost after from laptops adding AC68U

Any ideas as to whats gone wrong gratefully receved.
We have used a AC68U in Access Point mode (I had too many problems with a server and ports being open to the web with it). My old NETGEAR DGND3700v2 had no problems with the server and all ports were fully shielded. But its Wi-Fi was poor in our house.
When we had both running, the AC68U was giving me 780Mb on the network. BUT when testing the internet I was getting between 3 and 23Mb. A second laptop was the same. A notepad was however getting the same as a desktop 37Mb.
The AAC68U is one side of a single brick wall (just having to have one long cable enabled us to do that). Which was one
thing effecting the Netgear before, but all the networking is where it is..
I have been having an internet problem so have been testing on a frequent bases and the Netgear WAS getting 37 when that was available. It clearly has to have Wi-Fi speed, usually that was about 70 to 80Mb.
I went back to just the Netgear and it also was only managing the lower internet speeds. Running both I again have speeds ranging from earlier today of 25 and now 13Mb. The desk PC had 37 each time.
We have tested with wi-fi on and off with both of them.
One laptop has an Intel AC the other an N Wi-Fi card. Borg=th used to get 37 ansd both have been used next to both routers as well as away from them In both cases distance made no difference.
We are at a total loss as to why both laptops should lose the ability to get full internet speed which ever wireless router they are connected to.

Have run network tests and they are good, upload is 114 and down is 270 and loaded the beta firmware, nearly 100Mb slower but no problem!

When I login web interface I saw 16 clients (usually 5-7). I began to update the value, and I had what I recorded on video (when the cursor approaches the topBanner, it freezes).
I immediately went to the system log to see there are hundreds of these posts (I do not remember exactly IP):
Mar 31 22:55:57 dropbear[1210]: Child connection from 225.*
Mar 31 22:55:59 dropbear[1210]: Login attempt for nonexistent user from 225.*
Mar 31 22:56:00 dropbear[1210]: Exit before auth: Exited normally
I went to shut off access to the administrator from the WAN
I downloaded the lastest merlin firmware and flashed;
Before flash nothing has changed.

RT-N66U (VER.B1) bad WAN Port?

$

A couple days ago while on my desktop I lost my internet connection and after trouble shooting my router which is the RT-N66U (VER.B1) wasn't working wired or wirelessly even though all lights were on and looked fine. I was currently on Merlin firmware from early February.

After finding this post by Merlin: http://forums.smallnetbuilder.com/sh...3&postcount=11

I used this method to flash the most current Asus firmware version 3.0.0.4.374.4561, I finished the set up and everything looked fine again but then after about 10-15 minutes I lost all wired and wireless connections again.

I then followed the same process again and this time flashed Merlin's latest version RT-N66U_3.0.0.4_374.40_0.trx again everything seemed fine but after around 10 minutes I lost all wired and wireless internet access again the same as before.

Each time after installing I'd telnet to the router on 192.168.1.1 and clear the nvram by doing

Code:

mtd-erase -d nvram
reboot

I also verified on each install the new firmware version number did show up correctly.

So I'm wondering if my WAN port has gone out or at least isn't stable and this is a hardware issue and it's time to get a new router?

Thanks for any input.

There is an problem with update date and time when I have Time Zone set to Vilnius, Warsaw (GMT+1). We are using Daylight saving time in Poland and on Sunday time was changed. Router did not automatically updated that using ntp (probably because of too big difference).
I saw that in some time zones is possibility to manually set daylight saving time, but in this zone it is not accessible.
Only indicate an problem.
I have manually set new time, so probably it will use now ntp

Potential heat issues

First, I have to apoligize. People who were worrying about heat issues were right.

It seems like that the amount of heat generated by those routers is more problematic than first expected. In the 374.40 release, I changed the way the webui was generated by the router. Unfortunately, looks like that the glue that was used to keep everything together isn't very heat-resistant.

Based on my estimations, I expect bits of the webui to become excessively fragile starting on April 1st. So, if you log into your webui on that day and you are running 374.40, be careful while navigating the webui, as bits might start falling off.

Recommendations:
- Make sure your router is well ventilated and not into a small closed space
- Inspect your webui for any sign of deterioration. You can try pushing back any falling bit, but I suspect that might not work if the glue has melted
- Avoid transferring large archives, as the fat bits might cause friction, which would in turn generate even more heat
- The radiation leak that might result from this isn't 100% lethal.

Sorry about that. I'll see if I can put together a workaround in a future release.

Wondering if I would benefit from this in my Condo.
Connecting to my 5GHZ, detailed network connection on xbox one tells me that my wireless strength is 51%, latency 60ms. Not sure if that is acceptable or not. My options are to use the 5GHZ, Use my powerline (that I use for my boxee box and receiver), use 2.5GHZ, or buy this extender and continue to use 5GHZ on my xbox one.

Suggestions? Anyone use this extender and offer input?

Problems with RT-AC66R webpage During VPN Connection & WAN HTTP Access

$

I am having two problems with my RT-AC66R router which are probably not related to each other and I'm hoping someone has some solutions.

The first one is the inability to access the router's website via its WAN port. I am using DDNS, which I know is working because I can access my LAN from the outside using OpenVPN and Windows Remote Desktop to one of the PC's on my LAN using port forwarding. I have the router set to use http port 8080 on the WAN, but the router will not accept an http connection to its WAN port. Curiously, if I use the WAN side's internet address from one of my PC's on the LAN side, the router's website is instantly opened.

The second problem is again with the router's website. If I have an active OpenVPN connection to the router, I can access the router's website with no problems both from the LAN or via the VPN tunnel. But if I attempt to access the VPN Server Tab while there's an active VPN connection, the website instantly fails. If I hit the back button in my browser I get the previous page displayed and if I then press logout or reboot, I get a confirmation message, but nothing works and the router must then be powered off to restore its website. When this happens, only the website fails, all of the router's other functions appear to continue working normally.
I am currently using Merlin 3.0.0.4.374.40_0 firmware on the router, but these problems also existed with the previous version too.
Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

OpenVPN - multiple sessions with same credentials

Hi there,

We're using the OpenVPN functionality in the RT-N66R, will one set of credentials work for concurrent logons?

Meaning, can I just re-use the user/pass and allow a dozen people to concurrently logon with the same cred's?

Also, yes, I know, not a good idea in practice but we're buying a Fortigate in a few weeks and this is just a stopgap measure.

Thanks,

Pondering NAS for home - DS414, or wait?

$

First off, forgive my the post length, I tend to do it ramble a bit, but I also like to think a well thought out post will receive well thought out response.

OK, so I'm new to modern NAS servers, but not to networking in general. Basically, a while back I saw reviews for WD's My Cloud, and after reading about all its nifty features, I remember thinking that'd be sweet, but it'd be nice if there was a model with RAID for redundancy. Low and behold, the EX4.

Once I actually began seriously researching it though, I found that it was relatively low-end, and that there are other comparable units capable of far more. I've been digging around for weeks, and I think I've more or less trimmed it down to Synology's DS414, but for a few nagging questions.

(Found this post very useful in my decisions: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/nas/n...nology-vs-qnap )

"What do I want to use it for?" I originally wanted just a storage space, but now that I'm more familiar with the capabilities a NAS server might have, I'm inclined to use it for download management and media serving, and possibly hosting my website's domain somewhere down the line. My only physical requirement is that it's at least a 4-bay unit, and performance isn't primary concern since it's just a home unit, and I'm a patient man.

As far as media serving goes, it would be ideal to have a NAS capable of it, but it's not a 100% deal breaker. I can run various media servers from my PC, which is on almost all the time anyway. Just would be a nuisance when another device wants media, and my PC is in use for other reasons.

That brings me back to my catch twenty-two:

I'm currently trying to decide if I need the extra horse power of the DS412+ over the newer DS414, (the latter can't run Plex Media Server) but Synology also released fairly recently the DS214play, which has hardware transcoding capabilities. I'm curious if I should wait to see if they release a DS414play or DS414+ or something in the near future, or just bite the bullet and go with something for the current lineup. I can wait, but not forever...

Anyone familiar with Synology's usual release cycle?
Or have other suggestions for currently available solutions?

For interest's sake, I considered the following:
WD My Cloud EX4, Sentinel DX4000
Synology DS414, DS412+, DS1513+
QNAP TS-421, TS-469L/Pro, TS-569L/Pro
HP MicroServer
Drobo 5N

Thanks all for your insight!

PS3 and Traffic Management + Top Bar Falling Down on Mozilla

Good Morning!

I have recently acquired a black knight router.

It is working fine with Merlins latest firmware installed except for 1 issues that I remain stuck on.

I have a playstation 3, when traffic management is switched on on the router and I go to test playstation connection on the playstation, it hangs on the NAT section and then doesn't give an upload/download speed and gives a warning about router not compatible with IP Fragments.

If I turn off Traffic Management it all connects just fine.

I have all the ports on virtual server for the playstation as per my previous router.

I tried running the ps3 in dmz, makes no difference.

I tried adding all the ports and placing in highest for the ps3 under traffic management, makes no difference.

I would like to use traffic management, but I also want ps3 to connect properly.

Please Help :)

Again please help, these issues keep me awake at night.

Thanks

RT-N66u 5Ghz locks up

$

Hello,

I am having an issue with my 5 GHz network. on the latest Merlin build. I have a Netgear WNCE4004 wireless media bridge. When it is connected to the 5 Ghz network, and my PS3 is streaming netflix, after a random period of time (5 - 30 minutes usually), it loses connection, and the 5 Ghz network becomes unresponsive.

At that point, I can see the 5 Ghz SSID on my other devices (iphone, ipad), but attempting to connect to the network fails. I either have to reboot the router or perform a "service restart_wireless" from the shell, at which point the network becomes available again.

I have tried different channels, and the "Auto" setting for 5 Ghz Channel. So far, I have not experienced the problem if I use the 2.4 Ghz band.

I looked at the syslog, and did not notice any issues. Is there any way to increase the logging level for the wireless activity, to help troubleshoot the issue?

As a secondary note, the last couple times I have experience the "settings have changed" page, when I attempted to log in to the router to look at the issue... What exactly causes this page to appear? I read that is may be a generic "offline" status page?

Thanks.
