RT-N66U and CDC 3G

Hey folks,

Merlin directed me over here following a thread on twitter, wonder if anyone has any experience/thoughts on my current technical challenge.

After a few reliability issues with BT I've purchased an RT-N66U and a USB 3G key to give us some resilience when the VDSL is down. I wasn't able to find any of the 3G dongles Asus list in the local stores, so I'm left with 3 options:
  • Huawei E3256 (4g/DC-HSDPA ready)
  • Huawei E5830 USB/MiFi (2/3 years old)
  • Novotel Wireless G930D (4 years old)

The E3256 would be my first choice to use, it's much newer and faster but unfortunately requires HiLink support as it's based on a CDC interface. I can see it recognised in the router interface but even with the modem type set to Auto can't get it to connect. I've tested the same key with my data SIM in my mac and it works a-ok.

I can't get the MiFi to connect via the USB interface which it apparently can do, the router detects it but again fails to connect.

The Novotel works, but I'm having connection stability issues and the router feels/smells a bit warm with it running, assuming it's drawing too much power or something. Either way it's not my preferred key due to the age/speeds it supports.

Any ideas on whether the Merlin firmwares support CDC or config options I might be able to pursue to get this working?

Spotted a thread about CDC over here, didn't seem to get a response.
